Impact of the Wright Brothers
By the time they returned from Kitty Hawk in 1902, the Wright brothers knew they had solved the crucial problems of mechanical flight. They immediately began the process of obtaining their basic flying machine patent, which they first filed in March 1903. It took more than three years for the patent to be granted.
Wright Patent
U.S. Patent 821,393, was granted on May 22, 1906, to Wilbur and Orville Wright for “new and useful improvement in Flying Machines.” The drawings that appeared in the patent are those of a glider, not a powered airplane. The Wright airplane patent was for the 1902 glider, not the more famous airplane of 1903.

During the following decade after the Wright brothers flew at Kitty Hawk there was a wide range of reactions to the new technology. The Wright Brothers had contracts with the U.S. Army. Other inventors continued to improve the performance of the original design thus creating jets which are used in the military and commercially. Airplanes are now commonly used for travel, as entertainment and enjoyment. Human flight was so significant and revolutionary, a breakthrough that its influence spanned beyond the aeronautical community.
The Wright brothers have brought a lot of recognition to the State of North Carolina. Kitty Hawk boasts the Wright Brothers' National Memorial. It is a source of pride to represent the American ideal of hard work overcoming all obstacles. It is more than just building a plane. It is the ability to scientifically conquer what was thought to be impossible, and provides inspiration to the men and women who will be contributing to our future.
